Snarkmarket on the upcoming DC Comics reboot and continuity as a storytelling technology.

By rebooting its continuity, DC is, in effect, updating its operating system. We’ll know in a few months whether it’s Linux or Vista.

But rather than thinking of continuity as some sort of sacred history of tradition, let’s remember that it’s a technology. And like any technology, it might be most interesting once we start thinking about how it can be hacked.

Things I didn’t know: Mordecai Richler reviewed Frank Miller’s Batman: The Dark Knight Returns for the New York Times in 1987. And he wasn’t a fan. [via]

The stories are convoluted, difficult to follow and crammed with far too much text. The drawings offer a grotesquely muscle-bound Batman and Superman, not the lovable champions of old. My oldest son, an expert in these matters, has suggested that the inspiration is not so much the old comic book as rock videos. I think he’s right. If this book is meant for kids, I doubt that they will be pleased. If it is aimed at adults, they are not the sort I want to drink with.

Henry Cavill is the new Superman. This means that three of America’s biggest heroes — Superman, Batman and Spider-Man — are all now played by British guys, which lead to an interesting conversation with my wife about how superheroes are being portrayed on screen and whether young American actors have the chops to play them.

(Related: This officially ends all hope I had that they would find a way to reverse time — this is Superman, after all — and cast Jim Caviezel ten years ago.)

The Green Lantern trailer. I stand by my previous statements that the Green Lantern isn’t a story that translates very well into a two-hour action movie.

Roger Ebert on Superman, which I consider to be one of the best movies ever made. [via]

Donner pulls off a balancing act involving satire, action, romcom clichés and of course a full serving of clichés from hard-boiled newspaper movies. What’s admirable is that Salkind and Donner realized they had to make a comedy. The film came in an era of Disaster Movies that took themselves with dreadful earnestness, and they knew the essential element of Superman was fun. Superheroes who came later to big budget movies, notably Batman and Iron Man, would be burdened with angst. But Superman was above that sort of thing. Above it, or emotionally incapable of it, or whatever.

He also mentions Reeve’s performance, probably one of the finest ever given by him or anyone else.

The next Batman film will be called The Dark Knight Rises, it won’t feature the Riddler and (the most exciting part) it won’t be filmed in 3D.

This Q&A with Garfield creator Jim Davis is notable for asking about those weird existential crisis strips from 1989. [via]

Oh, that. I was just trying to do something spooky leading up to Halloween, but I enjoy it when people see something deeper, and words like existential always make me feel smarter. I did get a lot of comments on that week of strips — not all positive. The loneliness theme really resonated with a lot of people. Some thought it was just plain weird, while others were worried I was taking Garfield in a dark direction. I must have watched a lot of Twilight Zone episodes leading up to that week.

The Atlantic interviews Robert Kirkman about the state of the graphic novel.

An unfortunate side effect of the Fredric Wertham case in the ’50s was they that Congress essentially killed horror and crime comics. It allowed superheroes to take hold as the core of comics. It’s unfortunate.

Saturday is International Read Comics in Public Day. [via]

Like so many great things in this world, Read Comics in Public Day has its roots in a joke. I don’t remember the exact wording, but it was something off-handed about reading novels on the train, because I was too embarrassed to read comics in public. Like many good jokes, that one had its root in the truth.

From Letters of Note:
