Chris Brogan’s Twitter unfollow experiment confirms that people are fucking weird.
There are no hard and fast rules. There are actions that will get you reactions. There are norms that are amplified in the digital space where there are fewer signals to follow. But the rules are all an imaginary set that you can test for yourself all you want. You want to use Twitter your own way? Do so. Make it valuable for you. If others say you’re doing it wrong, you’re doing it wrong.
My personal policy is to follow people I want to follow. I don’t follow back just because. But I do use BirdBrain on my iPhone to spot the many people who follow me, only to unfollow me when I don’t reciprocate within a few days. These people are are the Twitter equivalent to reality TV show contestants. Or just douchenozzels.
